The Silkscreen Process

The emulsion has just been applied to the silkscreen in a darkroom so that the photo-sensitive emulsion does not get exposed yet. It is kept in a box to dry for 2 hours so that this picture can be taken for documentation.

Meanwhile, the first design is printed on inkjet printable transparency.

Still in the darkroom, the transparency is placed on top the silkscreen with dried emulsion, a tungsten light bulb is used to expose around the design to develop the emulsion surface. A time of 30 minutes is used to develop the picture.

The silkscreen is then washed, and the unexposed area to light is flushed away, stubborn remnants are gently scrubbed away giving a clear stencil.

An unused t-shirt is placed on a hard board backing and the silkscreen is lain on it. Black fabric ink is added and a home made squeegee spreads the ink onto the stencil.

The ink fills the areas not covered by emulsion (the design).

The silkscreen is then lifted and the design is printed on the shirt. The design is left to dry for an hour.
final design on the t-shirt, friend as a model for the t-shirt.
